On the 65-year anniversary of the reign of Queen Victoria, the staircase was given the name “Queen’s Staircase.”This was due in part to acknowledge the work the Queen did to abolish slavery in the Bahamas.Atop Bennet’s Hill is  fort that dates back to the same time as the Queen’s Staircase.This fort which was named for Lord Dunmore, (the colonial governor of the Bahamas) whose 2nd title was Viscount Fincastle, is shaped like a steamboat and was mounted with several cannons.
