Down the River of Golden Dreams is the sophomore effort by the Austin based indie folk band Okkervil River and is album that is consistent with what they've delivered on their first five albums.

Alt-country or indie-folk act has been gaining hipster momentum throughout the past half-decade with a simple enough concoction of bruised Americana.

I once read an interview with Okkervil's singer/songwriter Sheff in which he said he didn't want to be famous--well, there isn't going to be much he can do about that after this album. For the Enemy: 5. I'm telling you ...Go ahead and call me "Dutch Door" for this one, 'cause I can swing both ways. Whilst being only the second subsatntive studio album it has maturity and adventure far beyond what you would expect from such a young(ish) songwriter in the sape of Will Sheff (he is too talented - even does the rudddy artwork). Okkervil River perfectly deploys healthy doses of Hammond organ, Rhodes piano, Mellotrons, and Wurlitzer over the course of the album.

As for Sheff himself, he sounds like the singer Jonathan Richmond could have been, but never quite developed into--and his lyrics read as beautiful on paper as they sing.

i don't see the point in comparing these guys to anything. Okkervil River is an I guess they belong in the indie-folk/avant-folk/alt-country genre... whatever that means.

Most of the songs wade in this pool of lost love and desperation, thrashing or floating about with a seeming disregard for stylistic retention, but in a manner so sufficiently suffocating it sometimes feels calculatedly linear, even though the results come in a variety of shapes and sizes: there are moments big and small, frisky and repined, shifty and direct.Okkervil River perfectly deploys healthy doses of Hammond organ, Rhodes piano, Mellotrons, and Wurlitzer over the course of the album.

A must-see. Do you know any background info about this track? Perhaps these sketchy moments where the band drifts into well-trodden paths and postured frameworks that don't necessarily reflect the band's ingenuity are mere aberrations or stochastic eventualities.

Most tracks are centered around acoustic guitar arrangements with the occasional ecclectic instrument thrown in for good measure. And so I take Okkervil River, for example: They seem to be pretty into their thing, be it alt-country or indie-folk or barnyard-to-dive bar-pop or what-the-fuck-have-you, and they seem pretty sincere about it-- which is the crux of the issue; but then again, you never can be too sure.
