it would've been better if jerks wouldve left trash behindWould do this trail again, but would make sure to go clockwise rather than counter clockwiseDid the whole trail starting at. Hiked 15, 18, and 9 miles for each day. I was surprised how blown down/ tore up the last part of the trail was (Ralph’s views). 11 + the first day, then 15+ back to back days. Info about this series can be found at: https://www.alleghenytrailrunners.com/king-and-queen-of-the-alleghenies/ The Allegheny Front Trail was established by Ralph Seeley in 1991.
The forest scenery with the dense fern was pretty, just a bit much traveling through 15+ miles of it and was a bit nervous about stepping on rattlesnake since I always encounter them when coiled up right next to trails in the middle of forest like this (did end up passing one on north side though). Experience the Trails of Pennsylvania™
Lots of up and down in rocky areas as it goes around the mt ridges.
Choose camping in the south section wisely as there are only a few areas. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Please note many hikers suggest doing this loop clockwise as it is easier. This was my first large solo hike and it is forever engrained in my being.
Had already read about risk of using water from Black Moshannon stream, but was surprised just how bright orange the entire thing was including all the stained rocks. The new board walk at the end of the mosse hanne is great as well! The Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) is a relatively recently completed trail (1998) and which forms a nearly 42-mile loop encircling Black Moshannon State Park. Other than the initial opening across the nice new board walk and wooden planks, the trail moves away from the lake area so you don't exactly see anything of it other than some swampy areas. I did the entire loop in two day. I only ever saw 2 in the 42 mile hike. Would be impossible to move over for other hikers along this segment. In 2003 the project, now known as the Allegheny Front Trail… Loved this hike. The Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) is a well designed and well built 42 mile trail that encircles Black Moshannon State Park just north of the geographic center of PA.
Shorter hikes are also possible, utilizing many of the side trails and forest roads. Great trail, challenging in some areas with a lot of rocky terrain. Made for pleasant combo when all of it was damp with dew. Went counter-clockwise, started 5am on Friday and ended at 2:45pm on Sunday. Beautiful pine forest most of this area.
One of the biggest factors that made it difficult was that this trail is NOT 38 miles as listed here. The rhododenron was pretty heavy along Benner Run as well, but not quite as bad...the trail is just more enclosed there from surrounding vegetation than others. I would definitely hike the aft again in a more dry period!I really enjoyed the trail. Huckleberry Rd.
The first two days were racing rain and thunderstorms to set up camp which added an interesting little bit. Overall, has an amazing time and we are very proud of ourselves! Not many vistas this way as far as I went in and some portions of the trail converted into creek but other than that it was a very fulfilling experience! It’s been dry so a lot of the creeks on the south side were dried up. I did this part over thanksgiving last year and the board walks were all under water. The Allegheny Front Trail encircles Black Moshannon State Park and offers a number of vistas as well as excursions down off of the Allegheny Plateau along some very scenic mountain streams.
Definitely on my top 3 backpacking hikes in PA.We started Friday morning at 11am and completed Sunday afternoon at about 3PM. Had got to lot around 4:30am and was already pretty full from backpackers (though still plenty of space). It took about 20 hours with few rests. Trees, shade, streams, fields; what not to like.Amazing hike! The new ones seem much more sturdy!
Plenty of water, spaced well, thankfully.
The Allegheny Front Trail starts at the PA 504 trailhead, circumnavigating the State Park in a clockwise direction, starting at the "3 o'clock" position, with yellow blazes painting all 41 miles of the trail. Don't let the appearance of the elevation on AllTrails map fool you. The south loop was extremely boggy and flooded out near Shirks road until I left the Mosh Hanne area which was very poorly blazed.
Was solo, was roughly 2.5 days. The trail between the Ralph's views and Six Mile Run Rd are mostly all of the same scenery like this which can seem like you aren't actually getting anywhere. Allegheny Front Trail is a 39 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Philipsburg, Pennsylvania that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate.
Will be going back to complete the loop.only did a 3 mile out and back section. The diverse forestry offers an intensely beautiful experience as you move your way through. Was such a relief after crossing Six Mile Run Rd and travelling on the nicely trimmed gradual climb in the pine forest. 42 miles in 2.25 days.
Would recommend 100%. Volunteer trail building crews from all across PA were assembled. It's a nice enough trail with only a few tough parts, so overnight would probably be more enjoyable than our hellish day hike.Did about half of the loop during an overnight trip. Parked at the tram parking lot off 504. Most heavily overgrown portion on north side was segment along Black Moshannon where the rhododendron was really creeping in the whole way and was basically pushing through it.
